What a subtle presentation by the debutante Prodipto Bhattacharya! Bakita Byaktigoto is a film that speaks about a world that is beyond our control, and the director was apt to make a strong statement about an imaginary place, Mohini. The film stars the much acclaimed Ritwik Chakraborty, who has tasted fame through Shabdo, recently.
In this film, Ritwik craves for the quest of love. He is accompanied by his cameraman, Amit and a strong desire to be struck by the Cupid's arrow. But, what is love? It is really an Utopian phenomenon? Let's see.
Through different references, and vague speculations, the hero reaches Mohini, the land of romance. It had been said earlier in the film that whoever visits Mohini, can't steer his/her way back to where he/she had come from. Fortunately, Ritwik experiences something similar.
He gets attracted to a girl, played by Aparajita Ghosh Das, and goes through a lovely phase of emotional and physical attachment. It is hard to define such an occurrence, until one sees the same. Anyhow, the speculations heard about Mohini, are no longer vague, and soon it becomes a romantic interest in the hero's life. Even his cameraman was not left behind to get caught in such a viral process. One might have heard of the surreal beauty expressed through the lens in realistic Cinema. Then what should it be called? Surreal Plasticity!
The hero comes back to his hometown, Kolkata, along with his cameraman, but could not resist the restlessness produced by remaining detached from the land of love. But, after successive trials, they could not locate Mohini as there is no place of that name. What happens then? Then, what about the experiences of love, lust, and whatever you call it? Was everything an imagination? Or, were they draped in an Utopian notion of love? Let the rest be personal... Bakita Byaktigoto Thaak.
The film overall rolls swiftly, and intellectually. The only problem would be with the commercial cinemaphiles, as this film does not deliver a plain ending. As, such an ending would not only hamper the beauty of the film's core, but it might also be claimed as unintelligent storytelling.
Overall, I would give 4 out of 5 stars to Bakita Byaktigoto.
